BLACK LEGACY COMMUNITIES TRAIL SYSTEM

JACKSON COUNTY, FL

The social dimension of life after the Civil War was anchored in and strengthened by faith-based and educational missions ran by volunteers of the benevolent society. One dynamic example of black land ownership is Jacob City, which originated, like most predominantly black townships, near the railroad along the West End of the city. On May 20th, 1865, African Freedmen throughout the Southeast received a new Emancipation, creating a new social contract that paved the way for the industrial age.
